Description:

The oldest scientific examination of the image "impressed" on the tilma dates back to 1666. It consists of two ayate sheets - a rough agave fiber fabric, used in Mexico by poor Indians to make clothes - sewn together with fine thread. On it we see the image of the Virgin, slightly smaller than the natural - the stature is 143 centimeters - and of a slightly dark complexion, whence the popular Mexican appellation of Virgen Morena or Morenita, surrounded by the sun's rays and with the moon under his feet, according to the figure of the Woman of the Apocalypse. The facial features are neither European nor Indian, but rather mestizo - "prophetic" at the time of the apparition - so that today, after centuries of mixing between the two races, the Virgin of Guadalupe typically appears "Mexican" ". Under the silver sickle of the moon an angel, whose wings are adorned with long red, white and green feathers, supports the Virgin who, under a blue-green mantle covered with golden stars, wears a pink "embroidered" tunic of budding flowers from the gilded edges and tightened above the waist by a dark purple belt: this belt - the "sign of recognition", among the Aztecs, of pregnant women - indicates that the Virgin is about to give the Savior to men.

The results of the examinations carried out on this image by the painters and experts in 1666 are the following: it is absolutely impossible that such a clear image was painted in oil or in tempera on the ayate, given the complete lack of background preparation; that the climate of the place where the image has been exposed, without any protection, for one hundred thirty-five years is such as to destroy any painting in a shorter time, even if painted on canvas of good quality and well prepared, unlike the rough ayate of the tilma of Juan Diego. The scientific studies on the image and the ayate continue in the following centuries up to the present day.
