Surgical Steel takes its name from the type of steel that is used for the creation of surgical instruments. In the world of modern jewelry it is used for the creation of rings, pendants, necklaces, piercings and earrings.
Types of surgical steel:
Surgical steel is a non-scientific term used to classify the steel used in jewelry. However, there are specific classifications used to identify the type of steel in a given piece.
The most common types are 316L and 316LVM.
The "L" symbol refers to low carbon emissions, to 0.03%, while "LVM" stands for "low carbon vacuum manufacture".
The type of steel most commonly used for jewelry creation is 316L surgical steel and I will explain later the main reasons:
It is not porous:
Surgical steel is not porous; this feature makes it very resistant to stains, since the substances deposited on the surface can be removed with ease. This quality is particularly important as dust, dirt and microbes can not penetrate the metal surface, making it extremely hygienic and easy to sterilize.
It is corrosion resistant:
As a rule, the higher the chromium content, the more steel is resistant to corrosion. This is why surgical steel is particularly resistant to corrosion. Pure iron rust easily. However, the chromium present in surgical steel reacts with oxygen in the air to create an invisible barrier, preventing iron and oxygen from forming rust. This is crucial for the steel used for piercing since body fluids are highly caustic.
It is hypoallergenic
Surgical steel is a highly hypoallergenic material, which means that people rarely experience allergic reactions to this material. While many implant devices are made of inert materials such as titanium, many others, such as bone screws, continue to be made of stainless surgical steel, due to the minimal risk of allergic reactions. We can therefore conclude by saying that the popularity of surgical steel in the creation of jewelry is due to the fact that people suffering from allergies to metal do not experience symptoms using surgical steel; that the surgical steel is harder than other metals, such as gold and silver, and is therefore more difficult to be damaged, and finally its chemical composition makes it almost free of scratches and allows it to withstand more efficiently the corrosive elements like sweat, dust and moisture.
